The following keynote lectures will be hosted by the Department of Law of the University of Siena in the 2018-2019 academic year, as part of the EULaw&SD Jean Monnet Module. All lectures will be open to students and the public.

Prof. Jorge E. Viñuales, “Towards a Global Pact for the Environment”

UnknownProfessor Jorge E. Viñuales holds the Harold Samuel Chair of Law and Environmental Policy at the University of Cambridge and is the founder and former Director of the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG). He is also the Chairman of the Compliance Committee of the UN-ECE/WHO-Europe Protocol on Water and Health, a member of the Panel of Arbitrators of the Shanghai International Arbitration Centre, the Director-General of the Latin American Society of International Law, and an Of Counsel with Lalive. Prior to joining Cambridge, he was the Pictet Chair of International Environmental Law at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, where he keeps a limited affiliation as Adjunct Professor of Public International Law.

Jorge has wide experience as a practitioner, both in an advisory and a litigation context. In addition to his work for the UNECE/WHO, he has served as arbitrator, counsel, expert and, earlier in his career, as secretary of arbitration tribunals in inter-State, investment and commercial disputes. He regularly advises governments, companies, international organisations or major NGOs on different matters of environmental law, investment law, human rights, maritime delimitation and public international law at large.

Prof. Laura Pineschi, “International Environmental Law and the European Union”

Laura_PineschiBorn in Turin, with a degree in Political Sciences and a title of Doctor of Research in International Law, Laura Pineschi is Professor of International Law at the Department of Law of the University of Parma since 2001. She has served as Dean of the Faculty (2009-2012), President of the Unified Degree Course in Political Sciences (2013-2016), and since 2016 President of the Center for Studies in European and International Affairs of the University of Parma. She is also the President of the Second Level’s Master Degree in Health, Environment and Food: European Law and Risk Regulation, and Director of Summer Seminars in Public International Law, Hague Academy of International Law in 2015.

Prof. Pineschi’s research activity has been primarily focused on the following issues of Public International Law: environmental protection (in particular, Antarctic environment, environmental impact assessment, human activities and harmful substances for the environment), the United Nations system (and, above all, peace-keeping operations) and human rights protection (with particular reference to the International Convenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of Cultural Expressions).

Prof. Giuseppe Cataldi, “Exclusive Fishing Zones and Ecological Protection Zones in the Mediterranean Sea Between European Union Law and National Claims”

giuseppe-cataldi-e1443612500136.jpgProf. Giuseppe Cataldi teaches International Law at the University of Napoli “L’Orientale” where he holds a Jean Monnet ad personam Chair on the “Protection of Human Rights in the European Union” and directs The Jean Monnet Centre on “The Protection of Migrants’ Rights in the Mediterranean”. He serves as President of the Association Internationale du Droit de la Mer and has advised European Union Institutions as well as the Italian Government on issues concerning the Law of the Sea. He is the consultant of the Italian Association of NATO Civil Servants and has filed appeals to the European Court of Human Rights and the NATO Administrative Tribunal. He has been Visiting Professor at the University Paris Sorbonne de Paris and has given Courses and Conferences abroad at the Universities and Centers: Shanghai, Beijing, Hague Academy of International Law, International Criminal Court, Baku, Tunis.

He is the leader of the Working Group III of COST-MARSAFENET EU Network and Member of FREE (Fundamental Rights European Experts). He has published books and more than 100 articles in academic journals, principaly in the field of International Human Rights law, Law of the Sea, Relationship between Domestic Order and International Law. He is the cofounder and co-director of “Diritti umani e Diritto internazionale” and a member of the Board of Editors of the “Italian Yearbook of International Law”.
