The following keynote lectures were hosted by the Department of Law of the University of Siena in the 2019-2020 academic year, as part of the EULawSD Jean Monnet Module. All lectures of the EULawSD Module were open to students and the public.

Prof. Joanne Scott, “Sustainable Consumption: The Geographical Scope of the EU’s Environmental Responsibilities”
Prof. Joanne Scott has been appointed as Professor of European Law at the EUI from 1 April 2017. She is on special leave from the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL) where she has taught from 2005. Joanne taught previously at the Universities of Kent, Queen Mary and Cambridge and has been a visiting professor at Columbia and Harvard Law Schools. She was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the EUI in 1997/98. Joanne was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 2013 and as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2012.
Joanne has research interests in the areas of environmental law and climate change law. She has been exploring the theme of EU extraterritoriality in her recent work following the award of a Major Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust (2012-2014). Joanne also has research interests in new modes of EU governance and in the relationships between different legal orders.
This EULawSD Keynote Lecture was hosted jointly by the EULawSD Jean Monnet Module and EuropeDirect Siena, and took place in the Aula Magna Storica of the University of Siena’s rectorate building (Banchi di Sotto 55, 53100 Siena, Italy).

Prof. Barbara Pozzo, “The Trajectory of Environmental Damage in Europe”
Prof. Barbara Pozzo is Professor of Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria in Como (Italy) since 2001, where she teaches Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law and Language and Legal Translation. She is the Director of the Summer School Program in Comparative Environmental Law, in association with UC Davis Law School, and approved by the American Bar Association. Since 2002, Prof. Pozzo is also the Director of the Ph. D. Program in Comparative Law at the University of Milan, where she has also served as the Director of the Master Program in Environmental Law (since 2001 and until 2010).
Prof. Pozzo has been visiting professor at the University of Hamburg, Montpellier, Louisiana State University, Fordham University, University of California at Davis, McGeorge School of Law at Pacific University, William S. Boyd School of Law at Nevada University. She is the Editor of two Series: Le Lingue del Diritto (The Languages of the Law) and Diritto ed Economia dell’Ambiente (Law and Economics of the Environment), both published by Giuffrè- Milan.
Prof. Pozzo has collaborated with various EU Institutions, such as Directorate General on Translation and Directorate General – Clima (Unit Adaptation) of the EU Commission, as well as with the EU Parliament .

Prof. Marco Gestri, “The Precautionary Principle in International and European Union Law”
Prof. Marco Gestri is Professor of International Law and Director of the Center for Research on the European Union, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He is the Scientific Director of the Renzo Imbeni Summer School, Modena; a member of the Board of Editors and Book Reviews editor of the Italian Yearbook of International Law; and sits on the Scientific Committee of Diritto dell’economia and of Security: Theory and Practice.
Prof. Gestri is also a fellow at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, and the Italian Society of International Law, and was a visiting professor at Catholic University in Milan (ASERI). He was previously visiting professor at Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, University of Zaragoza, LUISS University, Moscow State Institute for International Relations, the Italian Naval Academy and Rafael Landivar University.
Prof. Gestri served as a consultant to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was previously a visiting scholar at Syracuse University College of Law.

Prof. Nerina Boschiero, “The Principle of Sustainable Development in International and European Union Law”
Nerina Boschiero is Professor of International Law at the University of Milan and Head of Studies of the LLM in Sustainable Development. Previously, she was professor of International Trade Law at the University of Milan, Faculty of Law (2002-2012), professor of International Law and Private International Law at the University of Verona, Faculty of Law (1997-2002), professor of International Law, Private International Law, European Law at the University of Catania, Faculty of Law (1994-1997), lecturer of Private International Law at the University of Trento, Faculty of Law (1990-1992).
She has been visiting professor at the Institut des Hautes Études Internationales, University Panthéon-Assas, where she has taught a special course on “Propriété intellectuelle et droit du commerce international: analyse de certain question actuelles” (2009). In 2012 she has given a special course in Private International Law at the Hague Academy of International Law on “The Private International Law Dimension of the Security Council’s Economic Sanctions”. She has been invited as “rapporteur” at various international conferences all around the world. She directed many collective research projects supported by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research on various topics relating to private international law’s general theory and contractual obligations.
Prof. Boschiero has also been the Director of the new Department of Italian and Supranational Public Law of the University of Milan since 2012. She has been member elected of the Board of Governors of the International Association of Law Schools since 2009. Her current research interests are focused on the intersection and interaction between public and private international law.

Prof. Antonio Tanca, “The EU Crisis Management Policy. Institutional Aspects and Main Missions and Operations”
Antonio Tanca is an official of the Council Secretariat since 1994, having worked previously as a lecturer in international law at Florence University. He was a member of the Council Legal Service until February 1999 (dealing at first with external relations and later with agricultural matters).
From March 1999 to April 2010 he worked in the DG for External Relations. In this DG he has been dealing with Security and Defence matters, where he was directly involved in the setting up of ESDP. Later on he was put in charge of questions of disarmament, arms control and non-proliferation. He contributed to the drafting of the EU strategy against Weapons of Mass Destruction, while maintaining responsibility for conventional arms exports. In January 2004 joined the Asia team where he was responsible for relations with North East Asia, focussing on China, the Korean Peninsula, Japan, as well as the ASEM process. He contributed to the drafting and approval of the EU Policy Guidelines on East Asia of December 2005. In June 2008 he became Head of the Operational Unit in the DG E IX (Civilian Crisis Management), and from 1 May 2010 he held the same position with the Co-decision Unit, which is part of the DG on General and Institutional Policy, attached to the Cabinet of the Secretary General of the Council.
Dr Tanca holds a Ph.D in Law from the European University Institute, Florence (1990). He has a Political Science Degree from Florence University (1983). He was research fellow at Cambridge University, UK (1984) and at the Max Planck Institut für Völkerrecht, Heidelberg (1989).
