The academic staff of the Jean Monnet Module in European Union Law and Sustainable Development is honoured to announce the third keynote lecture of its 2019/2020 EULawSD series, which will take place between the two previously-announced events with Prof Federico Casolari (12 November) and Prof Francesco Munari (22 November).

On November 20th, we will host Prof Lorenzo Gradoni, Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law, for a keynote lecture on “The Theory and Practice of Counter-Limits Versus the Primacy of International and EU Law“. The lecture will take place in the University of Siena’s Department of Law (via P.A. Mattioli 10, 53100 Siena, Italy).

About the speaker
Lorenzo Gradoni is Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law. Before joining the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg, Lorenzo Gradoni was associate professor of International Law at the University of Bologna. He was also Guest at the Institute (2015), visiting professor at the Ecole de Droit de la Sorbonne (2011-14) and Research Assistant at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (2009-10). He holds a PhD in EU Law from the University of Bologna (2003).

He’s the recipient of the Italian Society of International Law Prize (2008) and the European Society of International Law Book Prize (2010). His main research interests include international legal theory, international inter-systemic law, international law and politics, WTO law, and international criminal law.

First 2019/2020 Keynote Lectures Announced

The staff of the Jean Monnet Module in EU Law and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce the first two keynote lectures of the 2019/2020 academic year. As with the previous two instalments, this new edition will bring a group of leading scholars to Siena in order to explore a series of hot topics at the interface of European Union Law and sustainable development.

On 11 November 2019 (4pm-6pm), the Department of Law of the University of Siena will host Federico Casolari for a lecture on ‘Systemic Violations of the Rule of Law Before the EU Court of Justice.” Casolari is Associate professor of European Union Law at the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna School of Law where he teaches EU law. He currently serves as member of the Flying Faculty of the China-EU School of Law (CESL), member of the Faculty of the “EU Disaster Response Law in an International Context” Summer School (University of Milano), member of the European Society of International Law and also a member of the Italian Society of International Law.

On 22 November 2019 (11am-13pm), the keynote lecturer will instead be Francesco Munari, Professor of EU law at the University of Genoa, former Jean Monnet Chair of transnational environmental law from 2015 to 2017, and Adjunct Professor at Libera Università degli Studi Sociali (LUISS) Guido Carli in Rome. Prof Munari will deliver a lecture on “The Circular Economy and the New EU Waste Legislation’. This EULawSD Keynote Lecture is organised together with Europedirect Siena.

The EULawSD staff is excited to welcome these illustrious voices, who will expand on the issues discussed during the module’s lectures and provide additional insights about the importance of the EU in realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. More information about the keynote lectures, including the biographies of the guest lecturers, is available here. New EULawSD Keynote Lecture: Arie Reich on The External Impact of the CJEU

The academic staff of the Jean Monnet Module in European Union Law and Sustainable Development is honoured to announce the fifth keynote lecture of the 2018/2019 series. On May 7th, we will host Prof Arie Reich, Professor of Law at Bar-Ilan University and Jean Monnet Chair of EU Law and Institutions, for a keynote lecture on “The External Impact of the EU Court of Justice“. Beyond the utmost interest of the lecture’s topic, the event also seeks to advance EULawSD’s commitment to developing synergies within the Jean Monnet community. In particular, the external impact of the CJEU jurisprudence relating to sustainable development issues represents a core area that will be explored in the discussion that will follow Prof Reich’s lecture.

The lecture takes place in the framework of Prof. Reich’s visit to the University of Siena’s Department of Law funded by the Erasmus+ ICM Siena-Israel Project, coordinated by Prof. Mario Perini. The lecture is co-organized with the Jean Monnet Module on the Europeanization of Constitutional Law (EUCOLAW), coordinated by Prof. Tania Groppi”.

Professor Arie Reich is the former Dean and current professor of the Faculty of Law at Bar Ilan University, and a Jean Monnet Chair of EU Law & Institutions. He specializes in International Economic Law and EU Law and has authored over 50 academic books and articles on topics ranging from International Trade Law, Public Procurement Law, European Union Law, Competition Law and Torts. Among them are his books: International Public Procurement Law: The Evolution of International Regimes on Public Purchasing (Kluwer, 1999); and The World Trade Organization and Israel: Law, Economics and Politics (Bar Ilan University Press, 2006). He is a Member of the ICSID Panel of Conciliators and Arbitrators, has served as the President of the Israeli Association for the Study of European Integration, and he is a member of the Executive of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law and a National Correspondent for Israel to the UNCITRAL. He has served as the Chairman of Israel’s Anti-Dumping and Countervailing Duty Tribunal, and as a Member of five different World Trade Organization dispute settlement panels in trade disputes between the US, EU, China and Russia.

He has served as Visiting Professor in UCLA, Georgetown University, University of Toronto, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, University of Luxembourg and Monash University, and been a Braudel Senior Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

EULawSD to co-host keynote lecture on human rights and the environment in the Inter-american System

Julian Eduardo Prada Uribe

The EULawSD staff is honored to announce that on October 24th at 10.00am it will co-host Prof. Julian Eduardo Prada Uribe (Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga), for a keynote lecture on “Medio Ambiente y Derechos Humanos en el Sistema Interoamericano de Derechos Humanos“.

The lecture, which will focus on the interplay between human rights and the environment at a time of critical developments within the Inter-american System of human rights, will take place in the Aula Vitale of the University of Siena’s Plesso San Francesco (Piazza San Francesco 7, 53100 Siena, Italy). It is co-organized with the Jean Monnet Module on The Europeanization of Constitutional Law, coordinated by Prof Tania Groppi.

Prof Julian Eduardo Prada Uribe is a full time associate professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB) since January 2010. He has been the academic coordinator of the Law School of the UNAB from 2013 to 2017 and previously worked as legal counsel in Bucaramanga for a number of years.

The keynote lectures of the EULawSD Module are public events aimed at exposing the course participants to a leading figure (scholar, expert or practitioner) in EU or international law and sustainable development, which touch on the most relevant issues and challenges in the field while also focusing on key themes that will be different each year. The 2-hour lectures seek to raise awareness among the general public about the importance of the EU in realizing the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

2018/2019 Student Guide Published, EULawSD Keynote Lectures Announced

The EULawSD academic staff is pleased to announce the release of the 2018/2019 student guide for the Master’s Degree in Law of the University of Siena, which contains a series of useful information concerning the European Union Law and Sustainable Development teaching course. The Student Guide can be downloaded here.

In this context, the Module staff would also like to announce the first three keynote lectures of the 2018/2019 academic year, which will bring three leading scholars to Siena in order to explore a series of hot topics at the interface of European Union Law and sustainable development:

3 May 2018: Keynote Lecture with Joanne Scott on Sustainable Consumption and EU Responsibilities

Joanne-Scott-2.-BWThe EULawSD staff is honored to announce that on 3 May 2018 it will co-host Prof. Joanne Scott, Co-Director of the Academy of European Law of the European University Institute, for a keynote lecture on “Sustainable Consumption: The Geographical Scope of the EU’s Environmental Responsibilities“.

The lecture, which will address critical aspects of the responsibility of the EU in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production, will take place in the Aula Magna Storica of the University of Siena’s rectorate building (Banchi di Sotto 55, 53100 Siena, Italy) at 10.00am.

The lecture is co-organized with Europe Direct Siena and takes place in the context of Europe Direct’s ‘Lezioni d’Europa‘. Prof. Francesco Francioni (Emeritus Professor, EUI), Prof. Massimiliano Montini (UNISI’s Director of Europe Direct), and Prof. Riccardo Pavoni (EULawSD Academic Coordinator) will engage in a discussion with Prof Scott following her lecture. The floor will then be open to questions from the academic and wider Siena community which will be present at the event.

Prof. Joanne Scott has been appointed as Professor of European Law at the EUI from 1 April 2017. She is on special leave from the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL) where she has taught from 2005. Joanne taught previously at the Universities of Kent, Queen Mary and Cambridge and has been a visiting professor at Columbia and Harvard Law Schools. She was a Jean Monnet Fellow at the EUI in 1997/98. Joanne was elected as a Fellow of the British Academy in 2013 and as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2012.

Joanne has research interests in the areas of environmental law and climate change law. She has been exploring the theme of EU extraterritoriality in her recent work following the award of a Major Research Fellowship from the Leverhulme Trust (2012-2014). Joanne also has research interests in new modes of EU governance and in the relationships between different legal orders.

23 March 2018: Prof. Barbara Pozzo to deliver EULawSD keynote lecture on environmental damage

1052_7_INSUBRIA_0233This week, a new keynote lecture will enrich the activities of our Jean Monnet Module in European Union Law and Sustainable Development. Prof. Barbara Pozzo, among Europe’s leading experts on private and comparative environmental law, will deliver a lecture on “The Trajectory of Environmental Damage in Europe” on Friday, 23 March 2018 at 10:00 CET. The event will be hosted by the Department of Law of the University of Siena (Aula D).

Prof. Barbara Pozzo is Professor of Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Insubria in Como (Italy) since 2001, where she teaches Comparative Legal Systems, Comparative Law and Language and Legal Translation. She is the Director of the Summer School Program in Comparative Environmental Law, in association with UC Davis Law School, and approved by the American Bar Association. Since 2002, Prof. Pozzo is also the Director of the Ph. D. Program in Comparative Law at the University of Milan, where she has also served as the Director of the Master Program in Environmental Law (since 2001 and until 2010).

Prof. Pozzo has been visiting professor at the University of Hamburg, Montpellier, Louisiana State University, Fordham University, University of California at Davis, McGeorge School of Law at Pacific University, William S. Boyd School of Law at Nevada University. She is the Editor of two Series: Le Lingue del Diritto (The Languages of the Law) and Diritto ed Economia dell’Ambiente (Law and Economics of the Environment), both published by Giuffrè (Milan).

Prof. Pozzo has collaborated with various EU Institutions, such as Directorate General on Translation and Directorate General – Clima (Unit Adaptation) of the EU Commission, as well as with the EU Parliament.

New Keynote Lecture: Prof. Antonio Tanca on EU Crisis Management Policy

atancaWe are honoured to announce that we have managed to co-organize, in conjunction with the Chair of International Law of the University of Siena’s Department of Law (DGIUR), a further EULawSD keynote lecture on Thursday 16 November at 15:00 CET.

Prof. Antonio Tanca, former Head of Unit of the Council of the EU, will speak about “The EU Crisis Management Policy: Institutional Aspects and Main Missions and Operations“. The external action of the EU involving crisis management raises important sustainable development issues, such as the EU responsiveness to the humanitarian needs of developing countries, the EU capacity to address climate emergencies and natural disasters, and the EU contribution to the restoration of the rule of law in post-conflict societies. With March 2017’s Rome Declaration, the EU Member States have emphasized the need for the Union to play a more decisive global role in confronting situations of crisis and vulnerability, some of which have a direct bearing on  European neighborhood countries or exercise pressure on the EU external borders.

In the context of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, adopted in March 2015 as the first major agreement of the post-2015 development framework of the United Nations, the EU external action on crisis management and disaster risk reduction also constitutes a key instrument for achieving the goals enshrined in the 2030 Agenda. The lecture thus represents a timely and valuable addition to the EULawSD module, and will be open to the public.

Two EULawSD Keynote Lectures Announced

The academic staff of the Jean Monnet Module in European Union Law and Sustainable Development is happy to announce that this year’s course programme will feature two keynote lectures, taking place on 1 and 7 December 2017, respectively.

Nerina_Boschiero_INTOn 1 December (11am – 1 pm), Prof. Nerina Boschiero will be at the Department of Law of the University of Siena to discuss “The Principle of Sustainable Development in International and European Union Law“. Boschiero is Professor of International Law at the University of Milan and Head of Studies of the LLM in Sustainable Development. Previously, she was professor of International Trade Law at the University of Milan (2002-2012), professor of International Law and Private International Law at the University of Verona (1997-2002), professor of International Law, Private International Law, European Law at the University of Catania (1994-1997), and lecturer of Private International Law at the University of Trento (1990-1992). Her current research interests are focused on the intersection and interaction between public and private international law.

mGestriOn 7 December (10am – 12pm), Prof. Marco Gestri will instead deliver his keynote lecture on “The Precautionary Principle in International and European Union Law”. Gestri is Professor of International Law and Director of the Center for Research on the European Union, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. He is the Scientific Director of the Renzo Imbeni Summer School, Modena; a member of the Board of Editors and Book Reviews editor of the Italian Yearbook of International Law; and sits on the Scientific Committee of Diritto dell’economia and of Security: Theory and Practice. Prof. Gestri is also a fellow at the Istituto Affari Internazionali, the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, and the Italian Society of International Law.
